DnD Character Backstory

Her name was Madelyne Crouch. It means high, strong tower, and she was named that because they wanted her to grow up strong of mind and soul. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, but moved to the very small Cheyenne, Wyoming when she was only 3. A tiny western town was all she had ever known, yet she has always felt the desire to go somewhere different, to change what her life looks like compared to the rest of her family. She had been raised to always forgive and always love, and that was something that would serve her forever. She was grateful for that. She probably had a thousand bad moments with her parents, but at the end of the day, they were always family. She knew she wasn’t leaving them behind, but they are still missed. She took solace in the knowledge that it would be a safe space for her as she continued on the journey of life. She was lucky enough to have been given to a family that would always love her.

Still, all Madelyne could ever remember was working towards leaving. She went to school and learned what she could to get to her goal faster. She wanted to live a full life, but she was eager to become something – to take what she had and use it for something. She tried to live the normal life of a teenager, but her need to get to her goal was too strong, and it eventually took control of her life. She didn’t think that she could truly live until she left the place that she thought was trapping her. She didn’t leave much behind. She thought that her best chance was to take an adventure and see what happened. Even if it went wrong, what could be so bad? She never cared what people thought about her, because she was determined to be somebody and to go somewhere. It was worth the risk.

There were so many things that she wanted. A peaceful and happy life. A family. Success. A good career. To make a difference. To become somebody that people look up to, or to do something that inspires something great. To be remembered as somebody and loved when she dies. To be able to say that she did it. To prove anyone who was ever mean to her, or didn’t believe in her, wrong. Any temptation or direct threat to any of these goals would end tragically. When facing the protection of what is important to her, there was nothing she wouldn’t do. Sometimes, she questioned her morals. Wondered if her approach to life was normal. She had always questioned human nature, and wondered if she would really be willing to do whatever it took.

Her greatest weaknesses have always been her anger, her impatience and stubbornness, and her desire to control everything around her. On the other hand, her greatest strengths include an intense passion towards every aspect of life, analytical thinking, and a determination like no other. Madelyne often found that these strengths and weaknesses fed each other – they were hopelessly intertwined.  But she also knew that she could learn how to control these weaknesses and use them as strengths. She knew she could be strong enough to overcome anything. She was lucky that her name had been picked so well. 

Who knows what the future will hold? Just around the corner, there could be dark secrets and forced hands. A familiar presence looms on the horizon, but she is helpless to stop it. A fate lies in store for her where she must choose who she wants to be. And what she is willing to become. But these are not things she can control. She can only control what she does. So that’s what she does. There’s no telling whether Madelyne will remain a hero or turn toward villainy; the one thing she will always be is strong.
